Annie Neglak of Cambridge Bay is spending this month studying literacy programs in northern Norway at the invitation of Saami professors Nina Hermansen and Jan-Erik Henriksen of Finnmark University College, who visited Cambridge Bay last year. The trip, part of Neglak’s social services diploma program at Nunavut Arctic College, will see her assigned to a literacy program for refugees and new immigrants to Norway. “The Saami are a bit ahead of us in terms of literacy,” Neglak said. “They seem to be more at peace with the idea that they can protect their own language and still learn other languages.” (PHOTO BY KEVIN MCGILL/NAC)
