Photo: Kangirsuk celebrates Arctic Char

The gospel singing group of Quaqtaq, Johnny, Rhoda and Lizzie, perform July 19, one of the opening acts at this week’s second ANNUAL Arctic Char Festival in KangIrsuk, the community on Nunavik’s Ungava Bay, with the tastiest, pinkest char in the Eastern Arctic. Other local and visiting musicians slated to perform at the festival include Beatrice Deer and Charlie Keelan, Claude McKenzie (formerly of Kashtin), Inu Pishuun-Nasakapi, Rick Dobera, Eli Agiyouk-Timutik Aliqu, George Kakayuk, George Angnatuk, Charlie Tumic, Maggie Akpahatak, Jobie Arnaituk, Charlie Iqalluk, Sandy Tooma, Peter Nassak Junior, Paulusie Saviadjuk, Etua Snowball, May Araaluk Band, Jeannie and Zebedee Nungak, Willis Tagoona, Tyson Schallmann and Dave Lane. Char, served raw, cooked, salted, pickled, smoked and in sushi, will be on the menu during the festival, while a boat race and fishing derbies are also planned before the festival ends July 22.
