Two Puvirnituq sculptors, brothers Juanasi and Peter Boy Ittukallak, helped create this polar bear exhibit that was launched last week at the Quebec City Carnival. For the joint project, which was led by the organizations Équiterre and the Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau Québec, the Nunavik sculptors worked with British artist Mark Coreth to design the ice bear as an environmental statement. The bear will eventually melt away to reveal its bronze skeleton. The idea was first used last December during the United Nations climate change summit in Copenhagen. The sculpture will remain in front of Quebec’s Parliament buildings for another week before traveling to Ottawa.
