Photo: Parks officials to assess Auyuittuq erosion damage

Parks Canada safety specialists will be hiking into Akshayuk Pass from Qikiqtarjuaq and Pangnirtung this weekend to assess the damage from erosion and high water — similar to that seen here at Crater Lake in 2008 — which led to the closure of parts of Auyuittuq National Park on Aug. 1. Stranded hikers have been evacuated, with about 20 hikers moved to safety by helicopter. All hikers in the park have been advised of the closure, and most hikers have chosen to remain in the park, said Francis Garry Enns, external relations manager with Parks Canada’s Nunavut Field Unit – Parks Canada.
