Concerned Kuujjuamiut marched through town on Sept.10, World Suicide Prevention Day, to encourage residents to embrace life and say no to suicide, while Inuit leaders and members of the Inuit community in Ottawa gathered on Parliament Hill. “Youth represent 50 per cent of the Inuit population, so we have an important role to play, not only at community events like World Suicide Prevention Day, but also in our families and communities,” said Jennifer Watkins of Kuujjuaq, president of the National Inuit Youth Council, who was in Ottawa. “We may be young, but when addressing the issue of suicide, our time to act is now.” (PHOTO BY JANE GEORGE)
