Premiers from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nunavut, Yukon and Northwest Territories met in Yellowknife this week for three days of talks as part of the Western Premiers Conference, the annual meeting on issues of interest to Canada’s western provinces. Development of roads, ports, pipelines and environmental review processes were among the issues discussed before the meeting wrapped up June 22. They also talked about the need for a new long-term disaster mitigation program and the need for more attention about violence many Aboriginal women face. The premiers, including Nunavut’s Eva Aariak, first row on the left, celebrated June 21 National Aboriginal Day in Fort Simpson and toured the Nahanni National Park. (PHOTO COURTESY OF THE GNWT)
