Picco: Clyde power hike unacceptable

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

IQALUIT — The Nunavut government may want to consider changing the way residents pay for their electrical utility’s capital projects.

Uqumiut MLA David Iqaqrialu says residents of his riding may face a 40 per cent hike in their power bills because of the construction of a new power plant in their community.

“That’s unacceptable,” said Ed Picco, Nunavut’s minister responsible for the power corporation, in response to Iqaqrialu’s statements in the legislature.

Picco told reporters later that the government may consider spreading the cost of such capital projects over neighboring communities in an effort to lessen the financial burden.
