Picco opposes standardized testing
Ed Picco, the MLA for Iqaluit East and the minister of health and social services, weighed in on the standardized testing issue during a member’s statement this week.
“This type of testing serves no purpose,” he said. “I support the department of education’s position on testing and agree with many parents, teachers and education officials that say that arbitrary testing would serve little purpose for, most importantly, our children.”
The Iqaluit District Education Authority has been trying for four years to implement standardized testing in Iqaluit schools. Education Minister Peter Kilabuk has said that the group cannot proceed without ministerial consent.
