Police arrest 2 people in Iqaluit, seize money and cocaine
No confirmed connection to recent health warning about ‘black rock’ crack cocaine
RCMP in Iqaluit announced Tuesday that one month ago they carried out a search warrant and arrested two people for drug trafficking.
On March 2, RCMP seized 90 grams of “what is believed to be” both cocaine and crack cocaine, as well as $4,000 in cash from a home on the city’s 300 block, according to a news release from the police.
They arrested a man and a woman and charged them both with drug possession and drug trafficking.
RCMP sent out a warning last month about a type of “black rock” crack cocaine that had sent people in Iqaluit to hospital suffering from seizures. Police would not confirm whether Tuesday’s announced seizure and arrest was connected to the health warning.
The RCMP and NPS putting on a fight against cocaine and I couldn’t be more pleased. What happened to just smoking weed and drinking a beer, like the good old days? We don’t need these hard drugs in our towns. Look at what it’s doing to us and look at all the societies that had epidemics of it. Idc who is selling, I catch you myself, I’ll yell out your names off the hilltops and call you out.
Although most might think that marijuana is safe to take, I personally don’t think so. I myself do not take it but I have seen the damage it has done to the younger generations. Maybe it wasn’t as harmful as right now in the old days?
Older generations, who I know takes it, don’t appear to have money to put food on the table as they go from one house to another to grab something to eat.
I work, and support my family 1st. If I have left over money, then I buy a gram or 2 of weed. Don’t make the “older” generation sound bad. I know alot of people my age “over 55” do that. Family 1st, then me if I can afford it.
Nunavut News published the names, and to stop this epidemic of hard drugs, all news outlets in Nunavut should publish the names. We need to shame people for poisnoing the City by bringing these drugs in to make a quick buck.
Good idea to publish names but maybe wait until they are found guilty first.
Theyre published on other news sites, so it isnt a secret. It would be nice to hear NN’s rationale for not publishing this info time and time again
$$$$ talks don’t buy simple they hooked lol take there $$$
Don’t misunderstand my comment to be supporting drug dealers but there’s reasons why due process (innocent until proven guilty) is a foundational aspect of our court systems. False allegations and poor police work happen all the time. Once someone’s name is out there related to a criminal offense the damage cannot be undone. People lose their jobs, their relationships, and some even end up committing suicide because of the damage it does.
Once someone is found guilty publish the names everywhere, but until then it’s best to be kept private.
Not really in Nunavut though, I know of quite a few people that have been found guilty of serious crimes and they still own business, and are celebrated in the community for other things they do.
Also even when not found guilty in a Court we all know of wife beaters and people that have stolen from various community organizations.
How many known/convicted pedophiles end up being respected elders? Every community has this problem. Are we supposed to learn from these elders who used to abuse kids?
Not every elder is a drug dealer. Don’t smear the ones who are not. You’re painting a picture for the readers who’ll think all elders sell.
I say seize more drug dealers! They are constantly scaring elders who live in the same apartments with all the violence that goes to the dealer’s place! Broken windows all the time daily and housing repairs the windows so fast! Housing should have other priorities on other houses that need repairs, not the drug dealers damages! I can name a couple that I know and I could also name those who do crack cocaine.
If you KNOW a dealer and don’t report it to the RCMP = YOU are the problem’
I myself as an ex resined of Iqaluit Nunavut who was busted trafficking have learned my lesson but Nunavut has always been prey for drugs cause of the high cost of them up there. The gangs are moving in they always have been there just getting noticed now crack cocaine has been up there awhile it’s about time they crack down on it I’m an ex addict my self of oxy contin and cocaine and completely understand the effect it’s having on the north I have Learned my lesson and now am sober over 5 years it’s not worth it
you are right old friend, you are right.
Even if the names of individuals are printed. Those same people show no shame or remorse. Fellow community members don’t shun them. They may have stolen money from
the local church, food bank, HTO. Or any other community organization. Even if they are found guilty of murder, spousal abuse, child abuse. Within their own community these people are given a pass. Every one knows who they are. Why print there names.
