RCMP officers in Iqaluit closed part of Sivumugiaq Street early Saturday morning for what appeared to be an investigation into a serious incident on the road.

A 200-metre stretch of the road (formerly Federal Road) north of the RCMP detachment was closed to traffic.

Shortly before 2 a.m., an ambulance and at least three RCMP vehicles were in the area.

A coroner’s office vehicle arrived in the area shortly before 2:30 a.m.

Iqaluit fire Chief Steven McGean arrived at the scene as part of the city’s emergency services department’s response.

The road closure affected people who were trying to leave the Aqsarniit hotel after its bar closed and taxis were forced to detour around the closure.
