Iqaluit RCMP are investigating the cause of a fire that burned a boat in the city’s Lower Base area on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
The fire department responded to a boat on fire on the Lower Base beach around 3 a.m., a news release said.
By 5:30 a.m., 11 firefighters and one fire engine had extinguished the fire.
No injuries were reported, the release said.
Madeleine Redfern, Iqaluit’s mayor, urged residents to ensure combustibles are safely stored.
“Arson remains a serious concern in Iqaluit. Don’t hesitate to call the RCMP if you see any suspicious activities,” Redfern said in the release.
Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

Why isn’t there a town curfew for kids yet? How many things and lives have to be destroyed before town council wakes up?! Give your head a shake and actually do something that our tax dollars are paying you to do!
It would be an unenforceable curfew. I never did any crazy things, but I couldn’t abide by a curfew when I was 12, even when the curfew officer chased me to my grandparents at 2am. Nor did my parents neglect me. Curfews are just impossible to enforce on any person. Yes, generally curfews may be followed by the majority of people and patrols may be helpful to some extent. But curfews alone wouldn’t be able to solve shack or boat fires. This requires more understanding of the underlying issues of homelessness, poverty, intoxication, causes of why certain persons start fires, why prevention programs don’t work, etc. Arson is really terrible, but around the world, poverty creates situations such as really bad tourist beatings in Costa Rica, random shootings in Toronto, looting and theft after weather disasters etc. These are difficult human nature attributes that are hard to solve. Poor morals isn’t limited to Iqaluit.
Curfews are unenforceable for everybody because you “couldn’t” abide by your parents’ curfew when you were young? Everything about that is weird and not accurate. I’m not even saying I agree or disagree with curfews, but that reasoning is not logical at all.
Hope they really find out who caused this destruction! CRAZY! and these types of destructive things are going to keep happening due to ?????? Hurry up and start having Bylaw 24/7
murders, fires lit no news its all hush hush here in capituuul is it someone that is keeping things moving making all criminal activity “Normal” normlaizing things so they can be in charge
Food for thought: What makes you think it was kids?? Albeit I agree with the concept of a curfew.
History.
The school tent fire in Apex was set by a man, which has been released to the public but no one has come forward to identify him.
The shack and sheds set on fire on the beach was likely set by an adult, as a man was seeing running away from the shack right before the fire started.
The shack last year was set by an adult, although accidentally – while drunk.
The anglican church years ago was set on fire by an adult man.
The fires to shack, ATV and truck set out in Apex was done by an adult man, who then may have been part of a murder in Iqaluit.
Another shack fire was set by a woman and her boyfriend was seriously injured and had to be medivaced to Ottawa. She was charged and convicted.
An adult was seen running away from the 4100 apartment fire which was ruled as suspicious.
Yes, youth do set some of these fires but not all.
