RCMP officers in Kimmirut continue to work with local search and rescue volunteers to find a man missing since the weekend when a boat capsized.
On Friday, two men were seen travelling west along the coast of the island in search of soapstone. At 10 p.m., they used a radio to say they were on their way back to Kimmirut.
On Saturday, boaters told police they came across a capsized boat near Big Island, about 30 kilometres southwest of Kimmirut. They also found the dead body of a man in the water.
The search for the second man continued, and a Canadian Coast Guard Cormorant helicopter arrived that night and continued looking for the missing man.
Boaters from the area assisted in the search on Sunday. At 6:15 p.m., the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre — a joint air force and coast guard search team — told police it had ended its search.
On Tuesday, RCMP said its officers and volunteers are still involved in the search.
