Pond Inlet fisherman dies at sea
Emmanuel Maktar, 24, went overboard while working on board an Arctic Fishery Alliance vessel Aug. 26
A Pond Inlet man died last week after being pulled out to sea while working aboard an Arctic Fishery Alliance fishing vessel.
The Arctic Fishery Alliance announced Friday that Emmanuel Maktar, 24, died Aug. 26 while setting gear on the fishing vessel Suvak.
Maktar’s arm got entangled in the buoy-line connected to the nets and he went overboard when the nets were thrown, the AFA said in a news release. The crew recovered him and did all they could to bring him back to life but could not save him, the AFA said.
Maktar had been a regular crewmember on the Suvak since June 2019.
“Emmanuel was a well-liked, hardworking young man,” said Lootie Toomasie, the CEO and president of the AFA, in the release.
After Maktar was brought back on board the vessel sailed back to Qikiqtarjuaq and the RCMP completed an investigation.
Maktar was flown on a chartered Air Nunavut plane from Qikiqtarjuaq back to his home of Pond Inlet on Aug. 29.
The AFA flew Maktar’s two sisters and aunt from Igloolik to Pond Inlet to be with his parents, as well as providing groceries to help with the cost of the funeral, Toomasie said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Emanuel’s family, friends, and fellow crewmembers at this unimaginable time of grief.”
