Pond Inlet elder honoured
A Pond Inlet woman is being honoured today by the Governor General for her contribution to equality for women.
Elisapie Ootova is a life-long educator whose work to preserve Inuit traditional knowledge and the Inuktitut language has garnered her the special recognition.
The award is called the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case, named after a historic case that gave women in Canada the right to vote. It recognizes the efforts women make to improve equality.
Ootova was selected because she is seen as a role model to young Inuit women.
Ootova and four other women were to receive their awards in a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa on Oct. 18.
