POV men back in court
Travelling court met in Puvirnituq this week to review evidence against two young Puvirnituq men accused of causing the death of another man and to select a jury for their trial.
In the early hours of Oct. 11, 2001, in Puvirnituq, police believe two men pursued another man and beat him with a baseball bat and pieces of two-by-four lumber. The man managed to get to the hospital for treatment.
Shortly afterward, police allege, a second victim was beaten by the same two men.
Residents of a nearby dwelling called the police. After police arrived on the scene, they noted severe head wounds on the injured man and called an ambulance.
Qaunnaq Uqaituk, 19, later died of head injuries at the Inuulitsivik Health Centre.
Charlie Quara, 31, and Qumaluk Alaku Kaitak, 22, have remained in custody since that time, facing charges of aggravated assault as well as second-degree murder.
