Power outages planned for Sanikiluaq this weekend

Sanikiluaq residents should expect a pair of planned power outages this weekend.

Community-wide outages are planned for Saturday and Sunday, both starting at 6 a.m. and running until 10 a.m., Qulliq Energy Corp. announced Thursday.

The outages are necessary so crews can make upgrades to one of the main generators at the community’s power plant.

In a news release, Mariana Barney, a spokesperson for Qulliq, said the work is complex and time-sensitive and must be carried out near live electrical equipment, requiring extra care and precision.

The work will enhance the reliability of Sanikiluaq’s power system by upgrading its capacity with a new generator set equipped with advanced control modules and new, more efficient technology.
