Prime minister announces funding, protection for High Arctic marine areas

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Iqaluit today to announce the creation of a new, long-term protected area in the High Arctic, called the Tuvaijuittuq Marine Protected Area. Combined with the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation, the areas cover more than 427,000 square kilometres, much of which is made up of the “last ice area”—a region expected to maintain year-round sea ice until 2050. The Trudeau government also pledged Aug. 1 to deliver $190 million to new marine infrastructure and Inuit training programs in five Nunavut communities.
