Qaapik Attagutsiak celebrates 100th birthday

Happy Birthday to Qaapik Attagutsiak, who turns 100 years old today. Attagutsiak, who now lives in Arctic Bay, was born on June 11, 1920, at a place called Siuraq, located between Igluligaarjuk (Chesterfield Inlet) and Coral Harbour, in Nunavut’s Kivalliq region. Earlier this year, Parks Canada honoured her as a “hometown hero” for contributions she made during the Second World War. Attagutsiak has made many other contributions, especially as a midwife. As a midwife, she helped deliver hundreds of babies and helped set up the Akausivik Inuit Family Health Team and Medical Centre in Ottawa, and she has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
