QIA directors to meet in Sanikiluaq

IQALUIT — The Qikiqtani Inuit Association’s board of directors meets in Sanikiluaq Feb. 21-25.

Events slated for Feb. 21 include reports from standing committees, the president’s and executive director’s reports and financial statements. Audited 1998-1999 consolidated financial statements for the Kakivak Association, Qikiqtaaluk Corp. and QIA are also to be presented.

On Feb. 22, community concerns from around the Baffin will be discussed, as well as the 2000-2001 fiscal year planning.

Feb. 23 will see board appointments and nominations, discussion of the National Park Inuit Impact and Benefits Agreements, and non-insured health benefits.

Other topics up for discussion on Feb. 23 include: Safe soapstone quarrying practices, potential development of Inuit-owned lands within municipal boundaries, and oil and gas development.

Feb. 24 will see a healing workshop, a meeting on a National Children’s Agenda and a report from the Baffin Youth Council.

Feb. 25 will see discussion of the dog team slaughter by the RCMP, the relocation from Qivittu/Padloping Island and an update on federal gun control legislation. Also on the agenda are urban multi-purpose aboriginal youth centres and crime prevention.
