Qikiqtani Inuit Association seeks community directors for Sanikiluaq, Pond Inlet

Byelection nominations close Dec. 13 at 5 p.m. for Jan. 20 votes

By Nunatsiaq News

The nomination period opened this week for byelections on Jan. 20, 2020, to fill community director positions in Sanikiluaq and Pond Inlet, the Qikiqtani Inuit Association has announced.

“This byelection was delayed by one week to allow all Inuit to fully participate after the holiday season,” QIA said.

Also, QIA will hold an advance poll on Jan. 13.

Those elected to fill the two vacant spots will each serve three-year terms.

Nomination papers have been available since Dec. 2, QIA said.

Eligible Inuit who wish to run can get those nomination papers on the QIA’s website, or from their local QIA community liaison officer.

All other election forms and documents, including lists of eligible voters, are available on the QIA website.

The community liaison officers are:

Sanikiluaq
Julie Emikutailak
867-266-8162

The deadline for sending nomination papers to the office of the chief returning officer for the vote is Dec. 13 at 5 p.m. local time.

You can send either fax or electronic versions of your nomination documents, QIA says.

To be eligible to vote you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 16 years old on election day, an Inuk registered with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. and be a permanent resident of Pond Inlet or Sanikiluaq.

QIA will hold an advance poll on Jan. 13.

Preliminary voters lists are now posted around the two communities, so QIA advises people to check to ensure that they’re on the list.
