Seven of the 10 winners of last year’s 2022 Qilaut songwriting contest are set to perform in Iqaluit this weekend.

The free concerts will include performances by Jocelyn Ukutak Malla, Rosalie Pissuk, Shauna Seeteenak, Agaaqtoq, Eva Okatsiak, Jocelyn Arreak, Joanasie Aglak and Eli Qaqqasiq-Taqtu.

There are two chances to see the show: The first event takes place at the Aqsarniit Hotel and Conference Centre Friday at 7 p.m. and the second is set for Saturday at 2 p.m.

The concert is a “fantastic opportunity to experience the vibrant sounds of Inuktut music in Iqaluit,” according to a public service announcement the GN released about the concert Friday.

Qilaut celebrates the territory’s music scene while encouraging the use of Inuktut.

Nunavut musicians have submitted more than 70 original songs in Inuktut over the contest’s seven years, states the announcement.

This year, the top three winners received $5,000, $2,500, and $1,500 respectively, and the seven runners-up received $500 each.

All 10 songs are professionally recorded and released on CD.

Note: This article was updated to include Joanasie Aglak as one of the performers.
