GN-sponsored contest celebrates original Inuktut works

By Nunatsiaq News

Aspiring Inuktut musicians take note — this year’s Qilaut songwriting contest is now open.

Nunavut’s Department of Culture and Heritage is accepting submissions for an opportunity to win cash prizes: The winner nets $5,000, 2nd prize is worth $2,500 and the musician who comes in 3rd will earn $1,500. Seven runners up will each get $500.

This year’s theme is Naglingniq, which translates to “love” in English, according to a Nov. 16 news release from the department.

Qilaut has been around for eight years. Over that time, singers and songwriters have submitted more than 80 original Inuktut songs.

Last year’s winner was Jocelyn Ukutak Malla of Rankin Inlet. She won for her song Kajjaarijara.

The winning submissions will be recorded professionally for a compilation album that will be distributed next year.

To listen to previous years’ winners, visit the GN’s Qilaut website. All submissions can be sent to qilaut@gmail.com.

The deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. EST on Dec. 31.
