The City of Iqaluit says that its firefighters saved three residential units from a fire that broke out on Thursday, Aug. 15.

“At 7:00 pm on August 15, 2019, the Iqaluit Fire Department responded to building 174, a fourplex, for a structure fire,” states a news release issued on Monday, Aug. 19.

When they arrived, fire could be seen venting through the door and windows of one unit, unit A, according to the release.

RCMP helped evacuate the three remaining units while firefighters quickly knocked down the fire near the doorway and windows from the outside, the release said.

Firefighters then entered the unit to finish putting out the blaze.

The unit’s residents were not home during the fire and no one was injured, the release said.

Altogether, 14 firefighters responded to the fire and put it out within an hour.

This quick action from career, junior and volunteer firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to the other units, the release said.

Residents of the neighbouring units were able to return to their homes.
