A 64-year-old Rankin Inlet man has been arrested for impaired driving, says Nunavut’s RCMP.

At around 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, police were dispatched after receiving reports of a possible impaired driver, according to an RCMP news release.

At the same time, students from all three schools in Rankin Inlet were out participating in the annual Terry Fox run and walk.

Bylaw officers had already tried to stop an ATV at a controlled intersection to let the students pass safely during the run, police said.

When the driver of the ATV failed to stop after being directed by bylaw to do so, police immediately located and arrested the driver.

Police have not named the man arrested. He faces charges related to impaired driving, police said.

The driver’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice as high as the legal limit, say RCMP.

“The Nunavut RCMP wish to remind the public of the dangers of impaired driving and the dire consequences that often result from operating a vehicle while impaired,” said the release.

The driver is scheduled to appear in court in Rankin Inlet Nov. 4.
