Rankin Inlet Mayor Robert Janes has died.
Janes died on Wednesday, May 15, after a long illness with cancer, said the hamlet’s senior administrative officer, Justin Merritt on May 16.
Janes served in municipal politics in the Kivalliq community for many years, first as municipal councillor and then mayor—a position he held for the last six years.
“He served his community with the great dedication during this time and had always worked towards the best interest of the residents of Rankin,” Merritt said.
Deputy Mayor Harry Towtongie will take over the responsibilities of mayor in the interim.
Nunavut hamlets hold municipal elections in the early winter of 2019.

Condolence to the family and residence of Rankin Inlet. This time of the year is when he would have his camping store open with a great big smile, ready to serve his community with friendliness. We will remember his kindness and generosity as well the discounts he gave over the years of the fishing gear especially fishing hooks. Rest in Peace, you will be forever remembered.
