Rankin Inlet police say they are investigating a fatal off-road vehicle collision that killed a young girl on Oct. 15.
Police responded to a report of a collision involving a side-by-side off-road vehicle near the elementary school at 9 p.m., according to a news release.
These vehicles, also known as utility task vehicles, or UTVs, are bigger than ATVs and feature side-by-side seating and steering wheels rather than handlebars.
A preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle rolled on its side after the driver lost control, the release said.
All four occupants of the vehicle were brought to the Kivalliq Regional Health Centre.
The driver of the vehicle, a 13-year-old female, and two other passengers, aged two and 13, were treated for minor injuries and later released, the release said.
The fourth passenger, an 11-year-old girl, died of her injuries, police said.

How in the world did a 13 year old girl end up behind the wheel of an ATV to begin with? I don’t even mean to blame her, she will live with this for the rest of her life and that is a tragedy too. But this should never have happened.
A UTV is pretty much like driving a car or small truck. Anyone who let’s a child drive one of those needs to get their head examined. An 11 year old has lost her life because of sheer stupidity, What a horrible thing to have happened. All over Nunavut we see people allowing children to do things and handle vehicles and equipment that they are far too young to operate. People need to exercise more care and not give in to whiny kids that want to go blasting around on skidoos, atv’s, utv’s , etc…. just because they can turn the key and press the throttle doesn’t mean they have the maturity/judgement to responsibly operate these vehicles. Be a parent for God’s sake!
Isn’t it a little bit too early to be judgemental, at least show some respect while families are in difficult time.
We all know what was being mistaken, parents only wake up when something bad happens and should be precaution on daily living. and yet, the driver was under age, yeah, but I hope youth will wake up, and let them read the owner’s manual. What age limit are vehicles to be driven.
But hey, I just want share my deepest condolences to the loved ones being left behind.
Crystal Charity’s comment was good and truthful.
And a 2-year old in there, too. My goodness.
When are we going to wake-up??? Children looking after children, children driving adults belongings with no licences. Children getting pregnant…ect ect. parents…where are they???? So many too many deaths.
