Rankin Inlet man guilty of sexual contact with child
Jimmy Iyakak, 43, of Rankin Inlet was sentenced to 60 days in jail and placed on probation for 18 months after pleading guilty to sexual interference, assault and violating the condition of his undertaking.
On July 19, a social worker alerted RCMP to a suspicious incident involving Iyakak and a three-year-old child.
Police interviewed the toddler’s mother, who said Iyakak reached down the child’s diaper twice.
Two weeks later, Iyakak assaulted the woman when she refused to drink with him. She sustained bruising to her head and shoulder. He threatened to kill her if she contacted the police, the court heard.
Iyakak has been in custody since July 30. Upon his release, Iyakak is prohibited from having contact with children under the age of 14 unless supervised by an adult. He’s also forbidden from drinking alcohol for a year.
