Rape case takes curious turn

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Iqaluit police say they’re unsure if an alleged rape near White Row actually happened.

RCMP were told July 21 that an unknown man raped a woman earlier that morning outside the White Row housing complex in central Iqaluit.

Police began hunting for the man, who was described as a pot-bellied Inuk male with strong body odour.

But later that week, the woman told police that she’d known the identity of the man all along.

RCMP say they’re still investigating the incident but may not lay charges.

“We’re not sure if an offense was committed or not,” RCMP Sgt. Mike O’Malley said Monday.
