RCMP goes back to black with vehicle redesign
New look replaces all-white colourization in first redesign since 1994

The RCMP is updating the look of its front-line police vehicles with a black-and-white body and reflective graphics.
The change is the first RCMP vehicle redesign in more than 30 years, RCMP said in its July 20 news release. The last time RCMP updated the look of its front-line vehicles was 1994.
The vehicles will start rolling out later this summer. The existing vehicles, with an all-white body, will remain on the road with the old design until they need to be replaced.
This means that Nunavummiut could see two different RCMP vehicle styles over the next few years.
“Provinces, territories, and municipalities will be able to include local identifiers based on regional requirements,” the release said. “These variations allow for local flexibility.”
Without referencing the April 2020 mass shooting in Nova Scotia, where a man in a replica RCMP cruiser killed 22 people across several communities, RCMP acknowledged that the change in vehicle appearance could raise concerns about impersonation.
If anyone is unsure whether a vehicle or officer is legitimate, they can call their local detachment to verify the car number, licence plate, or officer’s name.
Nunatsiaq News reached out to Nunavut RCMP about when its vehicles will have the new design, but a spokesperson did not respond before press time.
