Two people have been charged in connection with a fire at Resolute Bay’s observatory late last month.

RCMP said the Sept. 27 blaze destroyed the living quarters building at the observatory, which was unoccupied at the time.

The nearby building that housed a generator was damaged by smoke and water used to put out the fire, which forced a complete shutdown of all equipment.

The observatory is about 6.5 kilometres outside the hamlet.

In a news release Friday, RCMP said a 22-year-old female was arrested Oct. 1 and charged with mischief over $5,000 and break and enter with intent.

Then on Oct. 3, a 25-year-old male was charged with mischief over $5,000, break and enter with intent, and impaired driving.

The fire has put all data collection at the site on hold, impacting the work of several research project teams including ones from the U.S. National Science Foundation and the University of Calgary.

In an interview with Nunatsiaq News, Roman Makarevich, program director for geospace facilities at the U.S. National Science Foundation, said he couldn’t offer a timeline for restoration of the site due to the ongoing police investigation.

The two suspects will appear in court in Resolute Bay on Oct. 19.

So what are their names? They are adults, why hide their identities?

Do you want to know their names so you can reach out and help them?  I suspect not. You and the other thumbs up “haters” on here need to get a life and find something good to talk about.

Their names are in the rcmp’s press release. Not sure why the news doesn’t post it, but I did check and their names are on the rcmp Nunavut website.

It’s time to throw the book at these two, enough is enough. people are getting away with serious crimes and these two need to be made as examples; they sure would deserve it if full law was applied to their sentences. enough is enough, too many thinks Nunavut committing a crime is a laughing matter for too long now.

The millions of dollars of property tha has been destroyed. Alcohol abuse has reached a crisis level. It can’t continue to be ignored.
