RCMP officers in Iqaluit appeared to take a person into custody early Saturday morning after responding to a call near Lake Subdivision that prompted police to issue an emergency alert.

Cellphones in Iqaluit alerted residents to shelter in place just after 1:15 a.m.

The alert advised residents “shelter in place, lock doors and stay away from windows” but did not give information about the nature of the emergency.

At least five RCMP vehicles, including some unmarked vehicles, were on scene near the intersection of Tasilik Street and Imiqtarviminiq Street.

Several officers, including some in what appeared to be tactical gear were in the area, navigating around homes and using a loudspeaker to tell people to stay inside.

An officer on scene told a Nunatsiaq News reporter to stand back, saying, “This is serious.”

Just before 2 a.m., police officers put one person in the back of an RCMP pickup truck.

Shortly afterward, two of the RCMP vehicles left the scene.

As of 3 a.m., no updates had been provided by the Iqaluit or Nunavut RCMP.

Should they not be releasing an update once the shelter in place is over? We have had clients concerned as none were indicated.

Were they planning to tell us when the emergency was over over or are we just supposed to guess

I called the RCMP to inquire around 2:30/3:00pm and was told the shelter in place was still active, in all of Iqaluit, as we had a client wanting to explore Iqaluit. I tried to nail down the area using “What area do we tell our client NOT TO go to”, but they would not answer, simply stating ALL of Iqaluit is under shelter in place… frustrating and to be honest slightly worrisome.
