RCMP in Kinngait say a man who had barricaded himself in a home in the community has surrendered to police without incident.

He remains in custody and has been charged with “a number” of offences related to the incident, according to police in a news release.

The RCMP did not specify what those offences are.

There were no injuries as a result of the standoff, which lasted approximately 19 hours.

Support teams flew into Kinngait to help resolve the situation, including Nunavut RCMP’s crisis negotiation and containment teams, and the Ottawa RCMP emergency response team.

During the standoff, RCMP were asking people to avoid the area around 1000 block, and for those close to the scene to stay in their homes.
