RCMP to investigate Pond Inlet man’s death after incident with its own officers

Calgary police to conduct case review rather than third-party investigation due to ‘capacity constraints’

RCMP in Nunavut now say Calgary police will review an investigation into the May 4 shooting of a man in Pond Inlet. Initially, the RCMP said an outside force would conduct a third-party review of the incident in which a man died during an altercation with police. But the RCMP now says Calgary will do a case review of an investigation to be led by RCMP in Nunavut. (File photo)

After initially announcing a third-party investigator would examine circumstances around the death of a man in Pond Inlet after an altercation with police, Nunavut RCMP now say the Calgary Police Service will conduct a “case review” after RCMP have carried out their own investigation.

The incident occurred May 4, when Pond Inlet RCMP responded to a call about an “emotionally disturbed male in distress at his residence,” Insp. Denis Lambe, assistant criminal operations officer for the RCMP, told Nunatsiaq News earlier this month.

He characterized the incident as a “possible” in-custody death.

Several others were with the man in the residence and police were told the man had a gun. The others in the home left, except for the distressed man.

After officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, the man left the residence holding a firearm and “moments later was deceased,” Lambe said.

Lambe would not say where or how the man died, citing the ongoing investigation.

Calgary police spokesperson Adelina Banaj pointed to “capacity constraints” for limiting its involvement in the investigation to a case review.

That will happen once the RCMP’s investigation is finalized.

Nunavut RCMP spokesperson Sgt. George Henrie explained RCMP will review the incident “from start to finish — from the initial call to the RCMP officers’ response and after-care.”

“This review can also entail talking to other RCMP officers that were present, and any subject members,” he said.
