RCMP manning hamlet phone lines

The RCMP are no longer routing emergency phone calls to head office in Iqaluit, Premier Paul Okalik told the legislative assembly last week.

Hudson Bay MLA Peter Kattuk and Rankin Inlet North MLA Tagak Curley both raised the issue, saying that calls directed to Iqaluit have been a concern in the communities for some time.

“The RCMP have stated to me that beginning last week, they will not be answering from Iqaluit, but directing it right into the communities,” Okalik said.
