Two brands of cantaloupe have been recalled due to risk of salmonella contamination, Nunavut’s Health Department has advised.

In a release Tuesday, it said the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued the recall for Malichita and Rudy brands of cantaloupe sold between Oct. 11 and Nov. 14.

The department said these products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.

Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness, according to the release.

Short-term symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Young children, pregnant women, elders and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.

Anyone who feels they may have been sickened by eating contaminated cantaloupe should contact their local health centre, the department advised.

Have you seen the cantaloupes for sale in Northern Stores? They’re not fit for consumption even without salmonella.
