Respected Iqaluit hunter, community leader dies
Iqaluit resident Josie Papatsie passed away on May 25 of natural causes. He was 72.
The longtime Iqaluit resident worked closely with the Amorok Hunters and Trappers Association, Iqaluit district education authority, Maliiganik Tukisiiniakvik and the Iqaluit housing authority.
Papatsie often provided food for the community and taught hunting skills to youth.
City councillor Simon Nattaq worked with Papatsie on various HTA projects, including the formation of the Qalugiaq committee. Nattaq said his friend’s passing leaves a void in the community.
A memorial service was held on May 29.
