Rest in peace, Mosha Michael

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

I am writing this difficult letter on behalf of my brothers and sisters in the loving memory of our late brother, Mosha Michael, son of late Nuqingaq Takunnagaq and Mike Michael, who passed away in November of 2009 at the age of 61.

We were blessed to finally meet our biological niece, Heather Reid, with her two daughters, who flew into Toronto for his memorial.

We had a memorial service for Mosha at the Native Canadian Centre in Toronto. Thank you.

We were surprised to see a lot of his friends who attended the ceremony. We are mourning for his spirit to finally rest in peace because of the long waiting period before Mosha finally rested.

Mosha Michael is sadly missed by his family, friends and relatives. In the early 1970s, he was one of the first Inuit involved with Inuit broadcasting, when he made short films about our traditional culture.

We remember that exiting moment when there was going to be a show about our brother Mosha. He was the filmmaker, the storyteller and the musician, playing the guitar and singing throughout that short film.

We watched two short films that he made on the day of the service. Mosha was also an artist who made carvings that would sometimes tell stories passed on from our father and grandfather, who were also carvers.

We are sorry to have not attended his ceremony in Iqaluit since it is too expensive to fly to the north, but our hearts are with each of those who are also mourning.

God Bless.
