Saint Theresa gets reprieve

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

IQALUIT — The Roman Catholic diocese of Hudson Bay has agreed to keep managing the Saint Theresa’s home for the handicapped in Chesterfield Inlet until March 31, 2002.

Last November, Bishop Reynald Rouleau told the Nunavut government that the Catholic Church could no longer run the home. Rouleau wanted to let the present contract between the Church and the health board expire on April 1, 2001.

The extension of the service contract will allow Nunavut’s health board to evaluate the home’s future, said Health Minister Ed Picco.

The home has eight residents who suffer from a variety of physical and mental handicaps. Their care creates jobs and other economic spin-offs in Chesterfield Inlet.
