If you happen to have any Compliments brand chicken strips in your freezer, you should chuck them out or send them back to where you bought them.
That’s because they may be contaminated with the bug that causes a serious illness called salmonella.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued the alert last Friday, May 24, when they announced that the manufacturer of the chicken strips, Sofina Foods Inc., is withdrawing the product from the marketplace.
“The Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating an outbreak of human illness and has identified this product as a source of illness. The outbreak investigation is ongoing and may identify other sources,” the CFIA said.
Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick, the CFIA said.
Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems can develop serious and sometimes deadly infections.
And even healthy people may experience unpleasant short-term symptoms, such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.
“Long-term complications may include severe arthritis,” the CFIA said.
The product is marked “Chicken Strips — Breaded Chicken Cutlettes — Uncooked” and bears the code “2019 NO 24” on its outer package and “3288M” on its inner package.
“Check to see if you have recalled products in your home. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased,” the CFIA said.
