Santa makes Iqaluit visit a week after weather postponed early appearance

Christmas arrived early in Iqaluit at noon on Saturday, as the city kicked off its rescheduled Christmas Parade, a week after high winds and bad weather shut the parade down before it began last weekend.

There were 16 floats registered, up from last year’s 10, said special event co-ordinator Matilda Pinksen, who got a shout-out from Santa Claus as she directed volunteers onto the North Pole float.

“Santa thanks you for your enthusiasm,” Santa said as Pinksen directed volunteers. “Your smile means a lot.”

On Santa’s other flank was City of Iqaluit recreation co-ordinator Naja Pearce, who also smiled bright as she assisted two caribou onto the float.

“I’m very excited,” Pearce said, 15 minutes to parade time. “It’s the Christmas spirit.”

BeaverTails counter staff Ahmed Banjaki served free hot chocolate as volunteers prepared for the parade in the Arctic Winter Games Arena.

Floats included the Iqaluit RCMP and fire department, including airport firefighters, personnel for Canadian Arctic Protective Services, and Canadian North airline whose float featured a six-foot-tall polar bear.

“As every year, we try to add a bit more to bring joy and smiles to the audience,” said airline spokesperson Hance Colburne.

Other mascots included a giant dog and a walrus. Participants on several floats hurled candy into the crowd, which lined the streets in large groups ahead of the parade.
