School makes Qik kids, teachers sick
A team of experts from the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Dommunity and Government Services headed to Qikiqtarjuaq’s Inuksuit school on Monday to find out what was giving children and teachers nausea, itchy skin and swollen eyes.
“The school is closed until we can find out the source of the problem,” said Pam Hines, the GN’s deputy minister of education.
Last Thursday, principal Laura Marchand said the school was closed with about half of the kids and teachers at home sick. At the same time as the outbreak, work was being done on the school, raising speculation that something in the building was causing the sickness.
“All we know is that people are ill,” Marchand said.
The school remained close as of press time on Wednesday.
