Scientists want action on climate
IQALUIT — In the recent edition of the journal Science, academics from 17 nations signed an editorial asking for “prompt action” on global climate change.
They urged support for the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which sets limits on the greenhouse-gas emissions thought to cause global warming. They also lauded the work of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change.
“We support the IPCC’s conclusion that it is at least 90 per cent certain that temperatures will continue to rise, with average global surface temperatures projected to increase by between 1.4 degrees and 5.8 degrees C above 1990 levels by 2100,” says the editorial.
