Search for missing Kinngait hunter called off
Niviaqsi Alariaq reported missing Sept. 10 after not returning from a hunting trip
The search for a hunter who was reported missing Sept. 10 near Kinngait has been called off.
The hunter, Niviaqsi Alariaq, was last seen on Sept. 9 while hunting near the hamlet, according to Nunavut RCMP. After an extensive search involving several agencies, the search was officially called off Saturday.
“The Kinngait RCMP thank all those who were involved for their assistance,” acting detachment commander Const. Terri-Lynn Smith said in a news release Tuesday.
“Our thoughts are with the family and Kinngait community who have pledged significant resources into the search for Niviaqsi.”
The investigation remains open as a missing person case, the release indicated.
On Friday, the Department of Community and Government Services announced that Nunavut Emergency Management, after consulting partners in the search, had determined the case would be closed.
An email from the department noted local ground search and rescue teams “worked tirelessly” throughout the search
I said it before and I’m say it again these are preventable bring a in-reach it isn’t rocket science . Rip young man
Not everyone has money to purchase one or pay the $15 minimum monthly subscription let alone obtain a credit card for ease of payment.
Heck many people still do not have bank accounts because they cannot afford minimum monthly service charge.
There free to borrow at your hamlet office. If you can afford a boat smokes and gas you can afford the monthly charges on a bank account.
You are full answers, but your logic is flawed.
1. Not everyone has hunting equipment
2. Not everyone smokes
3. Not everyone can afford gas
There are many people that do not have equipment so they get invited by hunters who do, I invite men who do not have boats to go boating regularly, they only bring cloths and a gun, heck sometimes they do not have a gun and let them use one of mine.
The community SPOT devices are at the HTO office 9 -5 or Hamlet office Monday though Friday. They are limited only a dozen or so per community, very hard to obtain as they are not returned regularly, or the office is not open when you go out or all are already signed out.
Hypothetically Sunday morning is a nice calm, it is 6 am, you recommend that hunters to wait until Monday to go boating in the hopes they can sign out a device the next day?
The Hunter waits like you recommended its now Monday morning is a nice calm day again, it is 6 am, the hunter waits like you recommend until 9 am to to sign out a device.
1. the worker calls in sick the office is closed all day, cannot see if there is a device to sign out. You recommend the hunter wait another day to go out?
2. the worker had a medical appointment at 9am so the office does not open until 10, the hunter does not know if and when the office will open, should the hunter wait around all day again in the hopes the office opens?
3. the worker shows up on time but there are no devices as they are all signed out from the weekend prior, the hunter is SOL, you want them to wait until a device is returned to go out. what do you recommend?
It is now Tuesday, the wind if 30 gusting to 50, the hunter just wasted two good boating days to get food for his family over a SPOT device.
what is a: in-reach ? i heard a private party of men are still trying to find him since the official search ended.where could he be ? hope hes found.
Search and rescue volunteers are still searching for Niviaqsi using fundraising/donations. There is a fundraiser posted on the community page. Thank you to everyone who has been helping, donated, praying and by his wife/family during this time.
