The search for a missing 14-year-old boy in Arctic Bay has been suspended after 18 days.

“The decision to suspend the search was made because all search efforts were exhausted,” Nunavut RCMP spokesperson Sgt. George Henrie said in email to Nunatsiaq News on Wednesday.

Richard Bohlender Jr. is described as Inuk boy approximately five-foot-four, weighing about 140 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

He was last seen June 28 and was reported missing two days later.

Shortly after that, ground search and rescue volunteers, Canadian Rangers, Nunavut Emergency Management staff and RCMP officers started the search, which included using aerial drones and a police dog unit flown in from Quebec.

On Tuesday, the groups collectively decided to stop the search.

The RCMP will continue its investigation, Henrie said, adding “there is no information to indicate criminality” at this moment.

“This file will remain open indefinitely, efforts will be made to collect the missing person’s DNA (family or personal items), which will be added to the National Missing Persons DNA Program,” he said.

“In the event human remains are found years later, DNA would be collected and processed, with the idea that it would be matched with someone who is in the National Missing Persons DNA Program.”
