IQALUIT — The Nunavut government wants residents to come up with suggestions for the new territory’s official symbols.
The new territory’s flag and coast of arms were unveiled on April 1, 1999, but no other official symbols have been chosen.
The speaker of Nunavut’s legislative assembly, Levi Barnabas, is now looking for that “something very special” to represent Nunavut’s land and peoples.
Provincial and territorial governments generally name flowers, birds, animals or even minerals as official symbols.
A pamphlet has been sent to MLAs offices, schools, hamlet offices and elders’ facilities describing Nunavut’s symbols campaign. Suggestions for new official symbols will be accepted until October 15.
