Send in the kids
Aside from the children who stopped by the Anglican Parish Hall at lunch time for cookies and juice, there were no students present during public hearings into the proposed Education Act during the two days the hearings were held in Iqaluit.
The proposed act would govern the way education is delivered to children aged five to 18 in Nunavut.
Glenn McLean, MLA for Baker Lake pointed out the omission at the end of the first day of hearings.
“One thing that just struck me like a thunderbolt is that we’re not including students. There are some Grade 12s who could tell us a lot.”
The meetings, which will be held throughout Nunavut, are open to any member of the public who has an interest in education and the way it is delivered — including students.
