Sheutiapik mum on October intentions

Elisapee Sheutiapik is being coy on whether she’ll seek a third term as mayor of Iqaluit.

“Who knows,” she said Tuesday. “I haven’t had a discussion with family yet about that.”

Iqaluit voters will go to the polls in October to choose a mayor and council. Sheutiapik ran unopposed for the mayor’s job in the 2006 election.

Sheutiapik said there will be a plebiscite on the October ballot on whether to borrow money for a multi-purpose recreation centre.

The exact wording of the question hasn’t been determined, because city staff are still wading through the results of a community survey on what to include in the facility, Sheutiapik said.

Ratepayers defeated a proposal in the 2006 municipal election that would have given the city the go-ahead to borrow $12 million for a swimming pool and rec centre, in part because there was no clear plan on how to spend the money.

Sheutiapik said she hopes both homeowners and non-homeowners will be able to vote on this year’s plebiscite.
