SILA stations to study climate change in northern Quebec

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Quebec is giving $1,247,117 $ to Laval’s northern studies centre, le Centre d’études nordiques, for a new network of six so-called “SILA” stations that will keep track of changes in the environment and weather in northern Quebec.

This summer four stations will be set up and two more will follow in 2003-2004.

According to a provincial government press release, this money from Quebec’s research agency, Recherce Québec, will reinforce the Quebec research syhstem.

The northern studies centre at Laval was founded in 1961, and it involves researchers from francophone universities in Quebec as well as the U.S., Europe and other regions of Canada.
