A group of national Indigenous leaders are expected to meet with King Charles on Thursday, ahead of his coronation on Saturday, the Governor General’s office announced Wednesday.
Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, the King’s representative in Canada, will meet with King Charles at Buckingham Palace at 12:30 p.m. London time on Thursday (7:30 a.m. EDT).
They will be joined by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami president Natan Obed, Assembly of First Nations National Chief RoseAnne Archibald, and Cassidy Caron, president of the Métis National Council.
Obed could not be reached for comment Wednesday about the meeting.
Last month, the Canadian Press reported Archibald saying that Simon wanted Indigenous leaders to meet with King Charles to reset their relationship with the Crown.
The Crown has been criticized for its role in colonialism and there are calls from Indigenous Peoples for an official apology.
Archibald was quoted as saying Simon, the first Indigenous person to become Governor General, was working to facilitate that meeting.
In an interview with the Globe and Mail this week, Simon said King Charles needs to develop his relationship further with Canada.
The coronation service will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, where Simon will wear an annuraaq, or garment, designed by Inuk singer-songwriter Beatrice Deer, a spokesperson for the singer confirmed.
Simon will also attend a special coronation concert at Windsor Castle on Sunday.
Everybody is off across the pond for their photo op on our dime !!
I agree with you, but as you must know by now native leaders are very good to
themselves at spending their peoples money. Agree ?
As First Nations and Inuit people we have to make our leaders accountable, but nobody has
the guts to do so.
Five years ago I joined a workers union, got things with negotiation we need a Inuit peoples
union.
“Nunavimiuk” is the kind of commenter that would probably post and complain that our Inuit leaders have no connections and were not important if they didn’t go. They post and complain that our Inuit leaders are going on our dime if they went.
Complaining about everything.
It’s great that our leaders are up there.
How ludicrous. A reset with a monarchy which the british people let alone canada sees no use for. LOL
Shameful oligarch-inspired antisocial-socialist theatre and pageantry on my dime
The singular and all consuming obsession with receiving apologies is something to behold. There are those who say it will never end. I’m not sure if that is true, but it is hard to imagine the gears ever switching.
Yep, i m hoping for another 10 grand cheque, 12 grand with inflation.
Bow down and worship your king, people!
I only bow to my God nobody else, and I only have one King, sorry Charles.
Romans 13:1-2
Amen to that.
Time for canada to grow a pair like USA did and Become an Independent REPUBLIC no more British colonialism and monarchy
Not so much, look at the stability of Parliamentary systems as compared to republics like the US. Weakening ties with the monarchy is fine, but a republic is a recipe for political polarization and disaster.
Both systems have their up and downsides, both are broken in their own way.
I’m no monarchist, but a) don’t we have better things to do in this county than have a constitutional meltdown over what replaces the Crown? b) is it so bad we have a politically neutral head of state — in reality the Governor General, not the King/Queen — rather than as in the US republic, nutbars like Trump?
In the United States the Constitution is the King (the Supreme Court then is its guardian). You could argue the same is essentially true for Canada, as any assertion of power by the Governor General or English Monarch would probably cause a crisis that could lead to a quick ‘writing them out’ (Constitutional reform). This is the power Trudeau Sr. gave us in 1982.
The US system divides power much better than it does in Canada. Trump may have thought of himself as a King, but the system was designed to prevent anyone from asserting that kind of power.
Our system concentrates far too much power in the Prime Minister’s Office. We basically elect our own monarch who rules under far less constraint than a President does. There are some mechanisms to check power, but they are more extreme (the dissolution of Parliament altogether is always possible), but because they are more extreme they are rarely used.
It sets a precedent, congrats on the delegation for all the advocacy they do on behalf of Inuit.
A precedent for what, Larry?
Why is Simon portrayed as an Inuit leader? She is a representative of Charles to all people of Canada.
She leads no one.
This type of comment is the prime example of the dysfunction and victimization in Nunavut.
After 154 years of existence, Canada finally has an Indigenous GG, and it is an Inuit elder to boot. She taught Inuktitut in a real university, plus lead the ICC among holding other positions. If Mary Simon is not a leader within the Inuit community, then please tell us what your definition of an Inuit leader is
I found it odd that she was appointed after 215 unmarked graves were found in Kelowna and more were found. Almost like government was distracted people especially gullible indigenous peoples that this whole thing was part of reconciliation when her position is just mostly ceremonial and representing the government she fought against during her time at ITK and ICC>
She’s certainly a role model, some would say inspiration – no argument at all. Leader? Nope.
Miriak, I think I am going to be sick with that statement
The renowned politician leader of the Workers Party of GB has a few thoughts to share on the king and the coronation. MOATS his regular talk show can be found online.
Two issues he speaks of are that Charles was unfaithful to his wife Diana driving her to despair, And that Camilla would not be crowned Queen but the king consort, that has been reversed. There are other points spoken of which cast doubt on his character to be the king, his taking sides on political matters, something that the late Queen Elizabeth had not.
Let’s honour genocidal and thieves that got rich off stealing from Africa, Asia and North America!
Hold people responsible for the sins of the father much?
have you ever tried making sense
The poster has a good point. Charles has been in the job for a few months and has not yet had the opportunity to do anything – not that he has anything more than moral authority. He is following in the footsteps of the woman who was head of state during the greatest decolonization in British history. That is a hard act to follow.
On their return, get ready for the new Inuit leader as the ruler to drop. Who will speak in unison with the Nunavut Cabinet who recently met with the Feds in Ottawa. To get on the same story-line page?
Imagine they’ll all be pumping hard the same message over this spring/summer that the arctic is melting, and its climate change fault, meaning you. Say it loud and keep repeating it. People will believe it. Cheering for zero carbon and no cars, trucks, snow machines, boats, ATV and even closing airports.
With added message flair, not to eat meat but to eat bugs. While moving minds towards the joys of 15-minute cities to be watched, controlled 24/7. Oh wait, people are objecting to be permanently locked down over climate change in 15-minute controlled cities.
So a new name is springing up called The 15-Minute Community for more acceptance and cuddy mass togetherness, controlled. Watch.
Um, swallow conspiracy theories much?
Read the UN, WHO and WEF websites. Add in c4cities, Gates TED Talk, EU approval of force closure of 3000 Dutch livestock farmers while world’s largest cricket farm for human consumption in Ontario is built. Crickets creeping into food products now. California, cities/towns banning that no new gas stations built. Edmonton, Canada’s 1st 15-minute city now happening. Ottawa, North Vancouver and others in advanced stages setting up the segregation of cities and towns. Oxford, UK massive rise against. UK has over 43 cities 15-MC well on way. Blocking roads, camera installation to send fines automatically if travelling when not allowed. 100 trips out of 15-MC zone per year, but only with permission. Canada’s past reservation style? Increasing WEF push banning gas cars by 2023. Canada announced in 2022 by 2035, 100% cars must be ZEVs (zero emission vehicles). How will hunt? When do snow machines/ATV stop being manufactured? Talks of banks to stop loans to gas car manufacturers, and consumers to buy gas vehicles. Digital ID required to shop and do anything. New York city waiting for mayor to sign off on banning natural gas in new construction buildings. California, 70 plus cities doing the same, though slowed by court. Following agenda 2021, updated and adopted in 2015 to agenda 2030. Own nothing. 100% 24/7 controlled. Be happy. Climate lock-down. Is this what Inuit leaders want or will they voice concerns to the King and on the world stage that freedom, sovereignty vanishing in a snap?
Ok.? Keep watching infowars.
On matters indirectly related to the country and crown And disallowed on the national public broadcasting online information platform… speaking of the reporter Murray Brewster:
I read the journalist’s column If only to learn of the low to which the CBC has fallen in the rush to prop up the rhetoric of war. Chris Hedges book, The Greatest Evil is War, is worth one’s time to read, more so at this time when and as the thought of peaceful coexistence is branded as treason.
