Singh touts ‘commitment’ to Nunavut as Idlout claims territory as NDP ‘stronghold’

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh seems to be on board with Nunavut MP Lori Idlout’s remarks that the territory’s voters still lean orange.
Idlout called Nunavut “an NDP stronghold” last week when speaking about the 33 Nunavut Liberals who voted in that party’s leadership race, which Mark Carney won.
“To me, it means that Nunavummiut are impressed with my work,” Idlout said last week.
Singh, while in Iqaluit Sunday, was asked by a reporter if he also viewed Nunavut as an NDP “stronghold.”
Idlout has shown her “commitment” to serving the territory in Parliament, and that he has done the same, Singh replied.
“I want Nunavummiut to know that you matter and that coming here is my way of showing that you matter,” he said, adding that he’s “committed” to investing in housing, energy and infrastructure.
Singh is one of several federal politicians, including Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and a handful of Liberal cabinet ministers, who visited the Nunavut capital over the last two months for announcements and meetings.
Speculation of an early election is in the air following Carney swearing-in as prime minister.
Carney is also scheduled to visit Iqaluit Tuesday on his way back from Europe.
So far, Idlout is the only major party candidate announced to be running in Nunavut. She was first elected in 2021 and in 2023 got her party’s nomination to seek re-election.
“We need to make sure that there is a huge focus on investing in northerners, and northerners being engaged in Arctic sovereignty,” Idlout said in an interview Sunday.
With a potential spring election, she said, now is the time for Nunavummiut “to make sure that their voice is heard.”
We’ll see if he makes the same mistake Harper made when he visited his incumbent a while ago and refused to have a public meeting to meet everyday people, but instead did a guarded limo tour to Sylvia Grenell and then went to a meeting behind a wall of construction equipment. The Conservatives lost that election here, no wonder.
The NDP and Liberals literally did nothing for Nunavut. A vote for them is a wasted vote. They ignored Nunavut until Harper/Conservatives started investing in the arctic. Then NDP/Libs made lots of promises and ZERO follow-up. I challenge anyone to prove this wrong. Liberals did nothing for Nunavut and NDP even less.
I’m not impressed with Lori Idlout’s work. Never have been, never will be. And I’ll viote for anyone but her.
Looks like Nunavut will be an NDP stronghold by default with the other parties having not announced candidates, and an election likely to be triggered in days….
Lori 4 more years, 4 more years
Considering Trudeau no longer PM and continuation of JP for another year, think it’s time to vote for Liberals.
NDP support has fallen to nearly half what it was at the end of 2024. They are in danger of losing party status.
They should’ve made Charlie Angus NDP Leader back in 2017.
Not voting for NDP or NDP candidate. Really, thinking NDP stands for “Nation is Doing Poorly”.
wrote emails to our “Missing Politician”, never got a reply, not one reply. That is your current Nunavut MP, screening who is worthy/not worthy to correspond with
Nunavut voters are often pragmatic. There is no one party that can consider Nunavut a stronghold.
Nunavut does best when they vote for the party that will be in power. Having a seat at the decision making table is important, especially when it comes to Arctic soverneignty.
What Canada needs as a leader is someone to take on Trump, safeguard and grow the economy, reduce overly zealous immigration levels put in by Trudeau, and make Canada more affordable for the middle class.
Being a very respected Bank of Canada and Bank of England President gives Prime Minister Mark Carney the bona fides to take on the very difficult job of leading Canada for the next 5 to 10 years.
Sorry but Pierre Poilievre and Jagmeet Singh just don’t measure up.
Had Trudeau remained in power I would have voted Pierre Poilievre, that’s how sick of the former PM I and many were. But, given the choice, I lean toward the level headed Banker over the troll.
My thoughts exactly !!!
What are you smoking?
Nothing good has happened for Nunavut since Leona left office. Nunavut needs to elect a Conservative MP. The Liberals and NDP have failed Nunavut.
The conservatives have failed repeatedly to field an electable candidate in the last 3 elections at least. If they hope to win this one, which is possible, I hope they can finally get that done. I am not optimistic about this though.
sell out NDP , it was their job to call election , and didnt. now we pay high Carbon tax , even little Nunavut is punished for CHINA , India …. co2 waste.
open your eyes , lets open boarders between territories and provinces ! so that trade is cheaper and Canadian !
Carney cancelled the Carbon Tax…
According to the polls, Jagmeet Singh is in third place in riding if elections to be held today, he won’t likely get re-elected, Federal NDP will lose their party status and Nunavut again will be left behind.
Bold statement coming from an MP who accomplished what? Got a few passport applications expedited for her favoured constituents?
Pat should have won. But then again, Pat didn’t have the opportunity to exploit clients and use them as an excuse to campaign during a Public Consultation on a project that will bring generational wealth to Nunavut
